Central Market Role

Central Markets are situated throughout the world and offer a structured trading environment where all industry sectors are able to meet and collectively trade.  Within Australia there are six Central Markets, predominantly one operating in each state.

Why are Central Markets so important?

Central Markets play a significant role within Australia’s horticulture industry as the major distribution point of the nation’s fresh fruit, vegetables and some instances flowers. The majority of Australia’s fresh produce is either traded or transshipped through Australia’s Central Markets.

Additionally, Central Markets are necessary for the total supply chain of fresh produce throughout Australia, providing a critical link within the industry involving growers, wholesalers, retailers and associated industry groups.

Benefits of Central Markets

The obvious benefits of Central Markets are that they provide:

  • most efficient logistics solution
  • the best exposure for selling fresh produce
  • providing an efficient marketing position
  • access to large customer base in one location
  • an ideal environment for developing business
  • contacts and building relationships between all
  • aspects of the industry’s supply chain.
  • an orderly trading environment
  • access to warehousing and storage facilities
  • access to industry suppliers, support organizations
  • and services such as
    • credit facilities and quality systems
    • a venue and trading environment which provides a mechanism, determining prices based on the industry’s supply and demand ability.
