Avocado grower to lead Fresh Produce Market

The Adelaide Produce Markets Ltd Board of Directors has elected David Schirripa as their new Chairman following the public company’s Annual General Meeting last night.
Mr. Schirripa, 42 of Joslin, owner of an organically certified avocado farm at Ashbourne and principal of Schirripa Commercial Lawyers, brings two generations of experience in fresh produce growing, wholesaling and retailing to the role. He served on the Adelaide Produce Markets board from 2004 to 2007 and was once again elected by shareholders at the 2010 Annual General Meeting.
“It is a privilege and an honour to have been elected to lead the Market Board and I look forward to working through the challenges facing not only our wholesale market, but the entire horticulture industry as well,” Mr Schirripa said. The new Chairman cited the completion of the $5 million canopy project and commitment to improving the operating efficiency and competitiveness of the Market as key priorities.
The Adelaide Produce Market is South Australia's centre for the distribution and marketing of fresh fruit and vegetables. The commercial market allows for the exchange and sale of 185,000 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables between growers, wholesalers, supermarkets, greengrocers, food processors, exporters and providores with an estimated wholesale value of $600 million.
“I would like to thank retiring Board members Sam Christodoulou and Des Lilley for their many years of distinguished service and leadership of the company through several major capital projects,” Mr. Schirripa said. Both Mr. Christodoulou and Mr. Lilley have previously served as Chairman of the Board during periods of their respective tenures.
Following the 2011 Annual General Meeting, the Board now consists of David Schirripa (Chairman), Nic Minicozzi (Deputy Chairman), Tony Ceravolo, Danny De Ieso, Jim Demasi, Greg Griffin, Pat Scalzi, Michael Ruggiero and David Trosti.
