Healthy vending…fresh produce leader gives students a healthy snack alternative!

Release Date: July 23, 2011

The Adelaide Produce Market is leading a new initiative to ensure grabbing a quick snack from a vending machine no longer needs to be a bag of unhealthy chips or a sugary chocolate bar.

Due to be launched on Monday, five vending machines carrying fresh healthy snacks such as fresh cut up pieces of fruit will be available in all University of South Australia metropolitan campuses; one each at the City East, Magill and Mawson Lakes campuses and two at the City West campus.

“We are very excited to be launching these machines and giving students a fresh healthy alternative made from local ingredients sourced through the Adelaide Produce Market”, Adelaide Produce Market spokesperson Julian Carbone said.

“Students working on weekends or after hours are often sadly confined to eating bags of chips and chocolate bars as there is nothing else available. But now healthy alternatives such as a fresh fruit salad will be available, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week”, Mr Carbone said.

Michele Herriot, Director of the Health Promotion branch of SA Health said, “SA Health welcomes food industry initiatives that make it easier for people to buy meals and snacks containing fresh fruit and vegetables”.

The vending machines are part of a 6-month trial, after which the Adelaide Produce Market will push all levels of Government to have them placed in government buildings, schools, libraries, hospitals and anywhere else consumers are limited in their choice for snacks. The machines will be stocked and monitored daily by national vending machine company, NatVend.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for people to eat healthy”, Mr Carbone said.
