Is pomegranate the new symbol for Easter???

Release Date: April 19, 2011

The Adelaide Produce Market is calling on consumers to pass on the chocolates and hot cross buns this Easter long weekend and try a pomegranate.

“Pomegranates are in good supply this time of year and given the large quantity of edible seeds inside, this exotic fruit is widely considered to be a symbol of rebirth and fertility”, Adelaide Produce Market spokesperson Julian Carbone said.

For centuries it has been connected with religious ceremonies and appears on religious buildings. The pomegranate motif is often found on temple carvings and in Chinese paintings. It is also a symbol of fertility and was supposed to have been given to Paris from Venus.

Easter originated from a Northern hemisphere pagan celebration referred to as “Eastre”. Originally a celebration of spring and fertility, today Easter has primarily become known as the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. However many of the foods traditionally consumed over the Easter period originate from the pagan celebration.

“Pomegranates have an unacknowledged link with Easter, and I am hopeful it will one day get the recognition it deserves, and will be up there with hot cross buns and chocolate bunnies,” Mr Carbone said.

Pomegranates are locally grown in the Riverland, in season at the moment and are a good source of potassium and Vitamin C. Their growing season is short and ends in May.
