Local produce abundant as banana supply in doubt
Release Date: February 03, 2011
The Adelaide Produce Market is calling on consumers to not only continue purchasing other locally grown and available fresh produce that has not been affected by Cyclone Yasi, but to buy any bananas available in support of the Queensland banana farmers.
“Supply is in doubt at the moment, but consumers need to buy any bananas available to help prop up our devastated Queensland farmers who have been affected by Cyclone Yasi”, Adelaide Produce Market spokesperson Julian Carbone said.
“Some farmers picked before the cyclone, and some may be able to salvage remaining stock. Either way, the entire region and everyone in it will be deeply affected so we need to support them”, he said.
“If banana stock runs out, it’s worth reminding consumers that here in South Australia we really are spoilt for choice when it comes to fruit and vegetables. We have dozens of alternative fruit lines that consumers should make the most of…kiwifruit, oranges, pineapple, strawberries, watermelon and new season apples and pears are just around the corner”, he said.
Vegetables abundant supply this week include;
- Broccoli
- Sweet potato
- Pumpkin
- Carrot
- Mushroom
- Onion and
- Potato
Fruit abundant supply this week include;
- All melons (honeydew melon, rockmelon, watermelon)
- Strawberries
- Kiwifruit and
- Grapefruit
“The Adelaide Produce Market is opposed to imports of banana, especially while it poses a threat to the biosecurity of Australia”, Mr Carbone said.
“Purchasing local produce is preferred. It keeps jobs in Australia and contributes to the economy”, Mr Carbone said.
