South Australian Governor to unveil $5 million capital project at Produce Markets

Release Date: January 16, 2012

South Australia’s centre for distribution and marketing of fresh fruit and vegetables has completed its $5 million capital project aimed at protecting fresh produce and improving logistics and employment attraction at its commercial wholesale market in Pooraka.

The project has seen its wholesale trading market square completely covered with two extensive canopies, which has seen roof space almost doubled to 70,000 square metres throughout the site, creating the largest undercover market in South Australia and one of the largest in the country. Over 185,000 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables passes through the Adelaide Produce Market system each year, worth an estimated wholesale value of over $600 million.

The Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce will officially open the canopies in front of the local horticulture industry and other invited guests at a Grand Opening on Tuesday 7 February 2012, 9am till 11am.

The construction of the canopies has resulted in fresh produce being protected from the elements of the weather at all times while it travels through the wholesale market system. The vast roof space will not only allow for more rainwater to be captured and directed to the City of Salisbury stormwater harvesting system, but will allow for possible future investment into significant solar power generation.

The project was constructed by South Australian firm Pike Constructions, with the structured steel for the innovative ground-breaking design being fabricated by another local business, Manuele Engineers at their complex in North Plympton.

All media are invited to attend the Grand Opening, setup from 7am.
