Valentines Day - forget the chocolates and cards,  try some “romantic fruit”!

Release Date: February 10, 2011

The Adelaide Produce Market is calling on consumers to pass on the chocolates and cards this Valentines Day and try some romantic fruit.

“Romanic fruit is cheap, healthy, locally grown, in good supply and has been linked to love throughout history since Ancient Roman times,” Adelaide Produce Market spokesperson Julian Carbone said.

“Strawberries top the list when it comes to romantic fruit. They are often referred to as the fruit of love, probably because of their heart-shaped form, sweet juicy taste and vivid red colour”, Mr Carbone said.

Legend has it that if someone eats half a strawberry and feeds the other half to the object of their desire, they will fall madly in love with each other. Hailed as an aphrodisiac fruit from the time of ancient Rome, the strawberry is also a symbol of Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty.

“Local South Australian strawberry growers have been harvesting around the clock in preparation for their busiest time of the year”, Mr Carbone said.

Other popular romantic fruit lines include raspberries, cherries, peaches and melons, all because of their juicy, delicious taste and bright colours. Honeydew melons, rockmelons and peaches are also currently grown locally this time of year and are in good supply with good prices.
